Wilderness Athlete’s Summit Mt. Adams

Climbing Mt. Adams in Washington was nothing short of an epic adventure overcoming adversity with incredible people- Krista, Josh, Natalie & Chris. A quick change in the weather prediction resulted in extremely high winds that started just before sunset and carried through the night. We began our ascent at 4:00 am and the freezing fog set in about an hour into our climb. When we reached Pikers Peak there was virtually no visibility and the winds were gale force with gusts nearly taking us off our feet. With reduced visibility, we inadvertently took a route that lead us to a significant crevice which we safely avoided. We continued climbing but due to very steep terrain and high winds that made our climb unsafe, we stopped our ascent roughly 500ft from the summit. Our total trek took us up to roughly 11,800 ft in elevation which we climbed over 6,000 ft in 6 short miles for a total of 16 hours of climbing top to bottom.

Every great adventure builds up our soul. There really is nothing more rewarding than an “I did it” moment. At the same time, in the case of summiting Mt. Adams, this adventure really broke down my body. In all honestly, I underestimated this mountain and it’s capabilities. I made it but not without struggle. It was hard both physically and mentally and I’d be lying if I didn’t say so. That’s what I love about mountaineering, it shows us what we are truly capable of if we simply put one foot in front of the other and focus only on success. These are the times that inspire us to do more, to prepare more, to perfect on what made us struggle the first time around so that the next time is easier. That and surrounding ourselves with people that inspire us in the same way. I’m thankful for the amazing friendships that I have cultivated with incredible people that are both mentally and physically tough, people with kind souls that only inspire. With people like this surrounding you, there is no mountain too tall to climb.
