Big things really do come in small packages. And in this case, we’re talking big access. Back in 2013, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation purchased a small, 40-acre piece of property in central Montana where access to public land in the Big Snowy Mountains was difficult at best because of large, sprawling private ranches. But these 40-acres had 30-feet in common with the adjacent Lewis and Clark National Forest.
RMEF bought the parcel for $190,000 and sold it to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks for $50,000…in essence donating the remaining 140-grand as a gift that opened the access door to hunters. And all this happened just in time for the 2013 big game general rifle season. The Big Snowies feature prime habitat for elk, deer, black bears and other wildlife. Opening and improving public access is a key facet of RMEF’s conservation mission.
