Charcoal Creek – OnX Public Access Project

These sweeping views are in a state you might not expect – Nebraska. And yes, this is elk country. It is here in the Pine Ridge region in the northwest corner of the state where the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation teamed up with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and Nebraska Environmental Trust to purchase a 1,520-acre tract of prime habitat.

Now owned by the Nebraska Game and Park Commission, the land will be added to the adjacent Peterson Wildlife Management Area and open to public access for hunters and others to use and enjoy. The transaction greatly benefits the movement of elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep and other species because it increases the nearby complex of protected public and private land to nearly 37,000 contiguous acres. The immediate landscape also features vital riparian habitat including nearly 10 miles of intermittent streams including a segment of Charcoal Creek.
