The Trifecta of Montana
April 2, 2018PRS Skills with Jake Vibbert of JC Steel
April 2, 2018It was a wet rainy mess this weekend at the RockCastle LRSE Precision Rifle Series Kentucky Match but everyone still had a great time. The Field fire match was extremely difficult with high winds and less than ideal conditions. For me personally, this was my poorest performance shooting of the year. A couple mistakes cost me more than one stage on day two. When each round counts that’s bad. In total my mistakes on those two stages cost me a thirty place drop in the standings. But you just have to dust it off and get to the next match.
I cannot express how amazing the competitors are at these matches. We all help each other and compete more as a team. There is help on wind calls, sharing of gear and all around good sportsmanship. There are some great shooters that have really helped me- notably Matt Gervais has at each match I’ve been to, without asking watched me shoot and offered me some really helpful tips. Melissa “Missy” Gilliland is a lady competitor that has also been a great friend and extremely supportive giving me tons of great advice. Bronson Bartley for encouraging me to come out East and shoot and for toting around Nick Stelloh and I. And Rhett Walters has given me some great advice on journaling stages. Last but not least Jake Vibbert of JC Steel Targets for the willingness to coach and help better prepare me for these matches.
If any of you are like me and want to get into competitive shooting, don’t be afraid. Step up. Show up. I’m sure you will also meet other outstanding ambassadors in shooting sports that will mentor you and make you feel welcome. The only one stopping you from achieving your goals is you. I’m thankful for my friends in the shooting community and am already looking forward to shooting the next match!
