January 11, 2021When landscapes are fragmented, elk habitat and public access suffer. That’s why it’s important to highlight efforts like this one, the Morrison Creek project, in west-central Wisconsin.
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation secured ownership of what was a 360-acre private inholding in the Jackson County Forest and then placed it in the public’s hands, so now it falls under management of the Jackson County Forest and public access to it is available for all to enjoy. Not only is it important habitat for deer, turkey, black bear and other wildlife but it falls directly in Wisconsin’s southern elk restoration area—a place where RMEF assisted to return elk to its native Wisconsin range for the first time in more than a century.
Opening and improving public access lies at the heart of RMEF’s conservation mission. To learn more about RMEF access projects in your area, turn on the RMEF layer in the onX Hunt App to view project sites and boundaries.
